Awake! Arise! Act!

Thamizhnadu Brahmin Association (Thambraas) was established after several years of patient waiting by the Brahmins of Thamizhnadu. The state of Thamizhnadu has peculiarity of a social evil in the form of concerted Anti-Brahmin movement by certain elements who were the supporters of erstwhile British regime.

During 1940s, Sir C.P.RamaswamyIyer established a Brahmin Association consisting of elite Brahmins in Senior Positions. This Association did not take of as it did not represent the cross section of the Brahmins.

During 1960s, Kumbakonam Brahmin Youngsters wanted to start a Brahmin Association as a result of Local DravidarKazhagam members attacking KumbakonamShankara Mutt and dishonoring the photo of Lord Sri.Rama. This was an emotional upraise by the Brahmin Youth from Kumbakonam. At that juncture Sri.C.Rajagopalachari (Rajaji) advised the youngsters not to start an Association for Brahmins as he thought such an act will distance the Brahmins from other communities. This effort was given up.

When we did not have a forum to either represent or defend ourselves, our detractors have been indulging in concerted disinformation campaign by projecting false narratives against Brahmin community. This resulted in our own younger generation to wonder whether the allegations made against the Brahmin community could have been true!

During 1979-1980 period certain DravidarKazhagam members started writing in walls at various places in Tamilnadu demanding Nationalization of Brahmin Women (gh¥gh¤âfisnjáakakh¡F). This campaign of those elements enraged the Brahmins of Tamilnadu to rise emotionally and spontaneously gather in Thousands at the Temple Town of Palani and declare the formation of an Association for Brahmins titled ‘Tamilnadu Brahmin Association’ now this is pronounced as ‘Thamizhnadu Brahmin Association (Thambraas)’.

Our Association was formally launched on 16.11.1980 governed by written Bye-laws with democratic election process for Office Bearers at the level of Branches, Districts and the State. The First State President of Thamizhnadu Brahmin Association (Thambraas) was Sri.C.G.Venkataramanan, an Auditor from Coimbatore. The above two leaders toured Tamilnadu extensively to create awareness and unity in addition to establishment of District, Zonal and Branch Office Bearers.

Sri.Chinnai Venkataraman was the State General Secretary and he was a Good Speaker. His tour and speeches attracted lot of Brahmin Youth to join our Organisation.

The Third State President of Thamizhnadu Brahmin Association (Thambraas) was Sri.V.S.Ramasubramanian, an Advocate from Madurai.

The Fourth State President of Thamizhnadu Brahmin Association (Thambraas) was Sri.S.Balasubramanian, an Entrepreneur from Chennai. During his tenure, the Organisation grew in Chennai city and in neighbouring Districts in a big way. During his tenure only the familiarly known “Delhi Chalo” of Thambraas took place. He, with the staunch support of Sri.R.Ananthanarayanan of St.Thomas Mount and Sri.J.Varadharajan (JVR) of Chrompet, took along with them large number of Thambraas Office Bearers and called on the then Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Sri.Rajiv Gandhi and gave petition narrating our representations.

The Fifth State President of Thamizhnadu Brahmin Association (Thambraas) was Sri.S.Sriraman, an Auditor from Salem. He was simple and down to earth resulting in Branch Office Bearers becoming enthusiastic to take active part in the Organisation’s Activities and Services. During his tenure only our State Central Trust “Tambras Foundation” was established.

The Sixth State President of Thamizhnadu Brahmin Association (Thambraas) is Sri.N.Narayanan, of Tiruvottriyur. He has been associating with Thambraas since the very beginning. He was the President of Tiruvottriyur Branch, then the District President Chengai-MGR District (consisting of current Kanchipuram, Chengelpet and Tiruvallur Districts).

He became the State President from April 2000. He being a good Team Builder, he took lot of initiative to strength the Organisation. He frequently travelled the length and breadth of Tamilnadu and by his motivating speech, the Organisation Thambraas grew very fast. Large number of ladies and youth joined our Organisation in various Districts.

In the year 2004 under his leadership, we brought out the rarest rare of the book titled “Arunthondu Attriya Thamizhaga Andhanargal” was brought out. This was achieved by the team headed by late Dr.B.Ramamurthi, the renouned Neuro surgeon of Tamilnadu with our State President Sri.N.Narayanan being Secretary and Sri.K.C.Lakshminarayanan (Karuppaiah) being Treasurer and also Editor of the First Edition of this book. There was a committee of more than 20 intellectuals drawn from different strata which supported in a big way to bring out this Book (A Pokkisham).

Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetathipathi Jagadguru Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal and Sri Sankara Vijayendra Saraswathi Swamigal were vindictively framed with false cases and were arrested by the then atrocious AIADMK government headed by Jayalalitha Madam.

Our Association Thambraas undertook a massive State-wide peaceful agitation in the form of Hunger strike in all the District Headquarters. Sri.N.Narayanan had to negotiate with the then Director General of Police of Tamilnadu and obtain the due permission for our peaceful agitation.
